Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if SI is offered for my course?

The SI Schedule, which includes a list of courses and SI sessions, is available beginning the first Friday of each semester. SI sessions will be promoted by the SI Leader in class throughout the semester.

What occurs at an SI session?

SI is an opportunity for students to work together to explore important concepts, review class notes, discuss reading assignments, practice test-taking strategies, and prepare for examinations.

I filled out the scheduling survey...now what?

Days, times, and locations for SI sessions are determined by SI Leaders during the first week of classes, after a sufficient number of students have contributed feedback via the scheduling survey. The session logistics will be promoted the end of the first week, and sessions begin the second week.

The session days/times do not fit my schedule. -or- The locations are inconvenient. What should I do?

Based on the number of students in a class, it's impossible to accommodate everyone's preferences. We try to select days/times/locations that make SI available to the largest number of students at least once per week.

For students who are not able to attend SI sessions, other options for help are:

  • Requesting a Tutor
  • Using a Help Room
  • Meeting with an Instructor/TA during office hours (or by appointment)
  • Forming your own study group
  • Referring to credible web-based resources (Ask your instructor/TA/Leader for references.)

How often are SI sessions held?

At least three 50-minute sessions are facilitated by each SI Leader per week. See the SI Schedule for specific times and locations for your courses. More sessions are available for courses with more than one SI Leader.

Is my session canceled due to weather?

SI sessions follow the Iowa State University calendar. For example, classes are not in session during university holidays, fall and spring breaks, and times of inclement weather. Please check your SI Leader's website for an announcement if you are unsure.

How are SI classes selected?

Most SI sessions target traditionally difficult 100- and 200-level courses. These courses are usually large lectures that require heavy amounts of reading, have exams that focus on application and analysis, and offer limited opportunities for interaction. The remaining SI sessions are offered based on departmental requests and available funding.

Who attends SI?

SI is open to all students regardless of their ability levels. SI attendance is voluntary; however, our data suggests that the more often students attend, the higher their final grades will be in the course. We recommend attending SI at least once per week.

Why do SI sessions overlap?

More than 100 SI sessions are scheduled each week, which results in unintentional overlap. When a conflict occurs, we recommend students attend the SI session for the course that they need the most support. For the other course, you can:

  • Attend SI on a different day/time.
  • Attend SI with another Leader for the same course (if available).
  • Use the worksheets on your own (if available).

Why do some SI sessions change days, times, or locations?

Changes to the SI schedule may occur before or after an exam. SI Leaders often change the day, time, and/or location to accommodate longer review times and higher attendance for these sessions.

Why don't all Leaders post worksheets? Why do some not create and post answer guides?

The Academic Success Center supports SI Leaders in their decision to create worksheets and/or post answer guides. We encourage SI Leaders to facilitate based on their preferences.

Can I use a worksheet if I do not attend SI?

Any resources provided on the Academic Success Center website are available for student to utilize.
